Our 5 Days Tanzania Safari — Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Manyara - Overview

Tanzania's most popular safari itinerary, our 5 Days Tanzania Safari covers the essential story of East African wildlife across four national parks and conservation areas — elephants and baobabs in Tarangire, tree-climbing lions and flamingos in Lake Manyara, the open Serengeti plains with their wildebeest migration and resident Big Five, and a finale on the Ngorongoro Crater floor with its black rhino, lion prides, and flamingo lake — in a carefully sequenced route with a private vehicle and expert guide that builds in wildlife intensity and flexes around what the animals are doing rather than a fixed schedule. Whether you choose budget camping, mid-range tented lodge, or a luxury upgrade, the wildlife experience stays identical — the same parks, guide quality, dawn departures, and bush picnic lunches — with accommodation choice changing only your comfort at night, never the quality of your days in the field.

5 Days Tanzania Safari — Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Manyara - Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park (Elephants & Baobabs)

Meals: L, D ·Drive: ~2 hrsAfternoon Game Drive

Arusha to Tarangire National Park. Morning pickup from your Arusha hotel. Your guide introduces the 5-day itinerary as you drive south through the Maasai steppe toward Tarangire — Tanzania's elephant capital and one of East Africa's most visually dramatic parks. You enter in time for a full afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River, where the dry season concentrates elephant herds of extraordinary size — 200 to 300 animals moving through ancient baobab woodland in slow, purposeful processions. Lion prides rest in the riverine shade, leopards scan from rocky outcrops, and the sky above is alive with over 500 bird species. A bush picnic lunch is served inside the park. Arrive at your first night's camp or lodge as the baobabs turn gold in the setting sun.

Day 2

Tarangire to Lake Manyara to Serengeti

Meals: B, L, DTwo Park DayDrive: ~5–6 hrs

Lake Manyara & onward to Serengeti. An early breakfast before a day of deliberate, rewarding movement. Drive north to Lake Manyara National Park for a morning game drive — the groundwater forest at the park entrance is a dense, cool world of giant fig trees, baboon troops, and blue monkeys moving through the canopy overhead. The forest opens to the lake shore where flamingo flocks colour the alkaline shallows pink and your guide scans every acacia tree for Manyara's famous tree-climbing lions. After a picnic lunch, continue westward through the Ngorongoro highlands — a brief, breathtaking stop at the crater rim viewpoint before the road descends into the Serengeti ecosystem. Enter through Naabi Hill Gate for your first afternoon game drive on the open plains. Overnight in the Serengeti.

Day 3

Full Day Serengeti National Park

Meals: B, L, DSunrise DriveFull Day Plains

Full Day in the Serengeti. Before dawn, your guide has already received the overnight ranger reports. You leave camp in darkness and position on the Seronera Valley circuits as the first light touches the Serengeti horizon. Lion prides are still active, cheetahs are climbing termite mounds for their morning hunt survey, and the possibility of a leopard descending from an overnight kill in the Seronera's fig trees is highest in these first golden hours. A full bush picnic keeps you on the plains through midday — elephant herds move through the acacia woodland, giraffe feed from the tallest canopies, and zebra herds cross the open grassland in long striped lines. The afternoon circuit covers the kopjes and river systems as the light softens and the Serengeti turns from gold to amber. This is the day the entire safari is built around.

Day 4

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Meals: B, L, DMorning DriveCrater Rim Overnight

Serengeti to Ngorongoro. A final morning game drive in the Serengeti — your guide uses every minute before the park exit, positioning the vehicle for the sightings that early mornings consistently deliver. Beyond the Serengeti, the road climbs back through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the crater rim. Tonight you sleep on the rim — 2,300 metres above sea level, with the entire caldera spread below in the fading light. The highland air is cold and clean. The crater is in shadow. Tomorrow morning you descend into it.

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater Descent — Return to Arusha

Meals: B, L, DFull Crater DescentReturn Drive: ~3 hrs

Ngorongoro Crater & Return to Arusha. Early descent before the day-visitor vehicles arrive. Six hundred metres down the crater wall and onto the floor — a vast, silent, wildlife-filled world that feels genuinely separate from everything outside its ancient rim. Lion prides are active in the morning grassland. Elephant bulls move through the acacia woodland on the inner slopes. Flamingos mass at Lake Magadi. And somewhere on the open plain, your guide's binoculars are tracking the slow, dark shape of a black rhino — one of fewer than 30 remaining on the crater floor and one of the rarest wildlife sightings in Africa. A final bush picnic on the crater floor before ascending and driving back through the highlands to Arusha. Hotel or airport drop-off in the late afternoon. Five days, four parks, and a Tanzania that stays with you permanently.
