There are six established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain. All routes except Marangu and Rongai descend via the Mweka route. The Umbwe Route is the steepest, shortest, and most direct route to the Southern Glaciers, Western Breach, and Uhuru Peak. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Kilimanjaro. However, it is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively fast ascent to higher altitudes. This steep route is best suited to experienced trekkers who adapt well to altitude.

Day 1
Moshi/Arusha to Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Departing from Moshi or Arusha, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Umbwe Gate. Complete park permits while watching crews organize gear. Hike along windy forest trails through dense rainforest. The trail follows a steep ridge between deep valleys. Muddy and slippery slopes are expected, so hiking poles are strongly recommended. Overnight at Umbwe Cave Camp.
Day 2
Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Emerge from the dense rainforest and hike along a steep, rocky ridge. The landscape turns into moorland with heather fields. The path climbs steadily along the Umbwe ridge before descending slightly into the scenic Barranco Valley. Settle in and enjoy the views of the massive Barranco Wall. Temperatures begin to drop significantly.
Day 3
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, scramble up the famous Barranco Wall—a steep, non-technical rock face. It is a thrilling experience with superb views. Once at the top, hike across rolling hills and descend into the Karanga Valley before climbing up to Karanga Camp for hot lunch, dinner, and overnight.
Day 4
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Ascend through the dry and rocky alpine desert towards Barafu Camp. Once you arrive, you will have completed the South Circuit which offers majestic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks from different angles. Take a very early dinner and sleep early to prepare for the midnight summit push.
Day 5
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Begin your climb around midnight. Hike through steep volcanic screen between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers to Stella Point on the crater rim. Celebrate the breathtaking sunrise, then continue another hour to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa! After summit photos, descend back to Barafu for lunch and head down to Mweka Camp.
Day 6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha

Hike down the Mweka descent route through the lush rainforest. At Mweka Gate, receive your official summit certificates. Say goodbye to your porters and guides, and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a long-awaited hot shower, dinner, and comfortable bed.
