Overview

Why Pair Zanzibar With Your Safari

Zanzibar sits just a short flight from both Kilimanjaro International Airport and the Serengeti's northern airstrips, making it the easiest beach extension to any Northern Circuit safari. Most of our clients spend 5–9 days on safari followed by 3–5 days on the island — enough time to properly decompress without turning the whole trip into two disconnected vacations.

Stone Town: History and Architecture

Zanzibar's old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its narrow alleys lined with carved wooden doors, old Omani palaces, and centuries-old trading houses. A half-day guided walk typically covers the House of Wonders, the old slave market memorial, and the winding bazaar streets, ending with fresh seafood at the waterfront Forodhani Gardens night market.

Spice Farm Tours

Zanzibar earned its nickname "Spice Island" for good reason — clove, nutmeg, cardamom, and vanilla have been grown here for centuries. A spice farm tour usually runs half a day, walking through working plantations where guides break open pods and crush leaves so you can identify each spice by scent before it ever reaches a plate.

Dhow Cruises and Sailing

Traditional wooden dhow boats are still the classic way to see the coastline, whether it's a sunset cruise with drinks on board or a full-day sail out to a sandbank for snorkeling and a beach picnic. These trips are relaxed by design — no fixed itinerary beyond wind and tide.

Snorkeling and Diving

Mnemba Atoll, off the northeast coast, is the standout site — clear water, healthy reef, and regular dolphin sightings. Full-day trips typically include two snorkel or dive stops plus lunch on a nearby beach. Certified divers can also arrange PADI dive excursions to deeper sites around the atoll.

Jozani Forest and Red Colobus Monkeys

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is Zanzibar's only significant remaining forest and home to the endangered red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth. A guided forest walk here pairs well with a mangrove boardwalk visit, usually as a half-day trip combined with a beach stop.

Swimming With Dolphins at Kizimkazi

Early morning boat trips from the village of Kizimkazi in the south offer a strong chance of spotting — and sometimes swimming near — wild bottlenose and humpback dolphins. Morning departures give the best odds, as boat traffic and dolphin activity both increase later in the day.

Building Your Zanzibar Itinerary

We typically recommend one day for Stone Town and spice tours, one full day for a dhow or Mnemba snorkeling trip, and the rest left open for beach time. Prison Island (Changuu) and its giant tortoises make a good half-day add-on if you have extra time.
